How to Specify Sportswear Stretch and Recovery Before Sampling

A percentage of elastane does not define how sportswear will move or return to shape. Buyers need a controlled relationship between fabric, pattern, seams, elastic, activity, and sample evidence.

Stretch sportswear must extend where the body and garment need movement, then recover without unwanted growth, bagging, twisting, or pressure. Fiber composition alone cannot control that result. Fabric construction, stretch direction, pattern ease, panel orientation, seams, elastics, finishes, and repeated wear all influence how the product behaves.

1. Define the activity, wearer, and movement map

Start with the garment type, intended wearer, destination market, fit direction, layer position, activity, duration, intensity, climate direction, and equipment contact. A gym tee, compression-ready base layer, yoga legging, running short, warm-up jacket, and athleisure set place different demands on extension, recovery, coverage, support, and comfort.

List the movements the sample must accommodate, such as reaching, rotation, bending, squatting, lunging, running stride, seated posture, or repeated arm elevation. 2. Specify the fabric system beyond composition

Record the main fabric and every contrast, gusset, mesh, rib, elastic, lining, pocketing, and reinforcement material by stable code. For each, state fiber composition, construction, target weight, usable width, face and back, stretch direction, recovery direction, thickness, handfeel, finish, color, and approved reference. A similar elastane percentage can behave differently in jersey, interlock, rib, warp-knit, woven stretch, or brushed constructions.

Identify whether the material stretches across width, along length, in both directions, or only through mechanical give. State the intended grain and panel orientation in the garment. If moisture-management, air permeability, abrasion, opacity, pilling, dimensional stability, colorfastness, or another property matters, name the buyer-required method and acceptance value instead of assuming a marketing fabric name proves performance.

3. Write a repeatable stretch and recovery method

Do not record only a stretch percentage. State the specimen direction, dimensions, gauge length, conditioning, extension load or target extension, hold time, number of cycles, rest interval, calculation, and reporting unit. Define recovery as the remaining growth or return after the stated rest period, and record the acceptance requirement for both extension and recovery.

Use the buyer's nominated standard or an agreed internal comparison method consistently. Identify whether results apply to incoming fabric, finished fabric, washed fabric, a bonded or laminated assembly, cut panels, or the completed garment. Keep the tested specimen and report connected to the material lot and sample revision so a later substitution cannot inherit an approval it did not earn.

4. Connect stretch to fit, ease, and coverage

Define finished garment measurements, points of measurement, tolerances, and intended ease relative to the wearer block. Where negative ease or close fit is used, control it by zone rather than applying one reduction to every measurement. Waist, hip, thigh, knee, calf, chest, bicep, cuff, neck, and garment length may need different relationships to mobility, hold, opacity, and comfort.

Review how the fabric extends over curves and during movement. Check whether print, rib, texture, color, or surface appearance changes at the intended extension. For bottoms and close-fitting tops, confirm coverage in bent, stretched, and seated positions. A fabric that meets a flat stretch number may still create pressure, transparency, seam distortion, or poor recovery when combined with the actual pattern and wearer.

5. Engineer seams, elastics, and panel transitions

Map every seam across high-movement zones and state the required seam type, stitch type, thread, stitch density, seam allowance, reinforcement, and finish. The seam and thread system must extend with the garment without popping, tunneling, chafing, restricting movement, or creating an unintended rigid line. Test representative curved seams, cross-seams, hems, bindings, and attachment points rather than relying on a straight sample strip.

Specify elastics by material, width, thickness, recovery, relaxed length, extension during application, joining method, attachment, and finished garment position. Control transitions between stretch and stable panels, mesh, pockets, zippers, labels, heat transfers, embroidery, or bonded details. Decoration and trims can locally restrict extension or concentrate strain, so their final size and placement should be reviewed on the intended fabric and fit.

Measure dimensional change, spirality or twisting, elastic behavior, surface appearance, seam condition, and recovery after the agreed treatment where they are relevant to the product.

Avoid assuming that a finish name guarantees sweat management, cooling, odor control, or durability. Record the exact finish reference and the evidence the buyer requires. If a finish, dye route, print cure, brushing process, lamination, or care condition changes, review whether stretch, recovery, fit, color, handfeel, and seam behavior need to be reapproved.

7. Run a controlled movement and wear review

Label the sample with style, size, wearer block, material codes, lot or reference, finish state, and revision. Photograph consistent front, side, back, seated, bent, raised-arm, stride, squat, or sport-specific positions so revisions can be compared under similar conditions.

Separate measured conformity from wearer feedback. Check range of motion, pressure, slipping, rolling, riding up, waistband and cuff return, knee and elbow growth, seam strain, chafing direction, coverage, pocket access, and how the garment settles after movement. Repeat the priority movements and add a stated rest period before remeasuring high-risk zones. Convert feedback into numbered, observable actions rather than broad requests for more stretch or support.

8. Release one sportswear specification before bulk

List open items and exceptions separately. Approval of one color, finish, size, or material should not automatically approve every variation.
